The fish are very hungry these days; the water is warm and there’s twice of many of them as there were last year. So if I lean over the pond, they swarm! The smaller fish are from last year’s spawning.
But check out how clear the water is! The fish are above the deepest part of the pond (ok, that’s only 20 inches deep, but still!) and you can see the pebbles there clearly.

What do you do about the fish in the winter? I know that in NC, the fish live under the ice, because ponds never freeze solid here, but I suspect it’s a bit colder where you are.

The pond doesn’t freeze that deep, so we just leave the waterfall on and let the fish hang out at the bottom (maybe 2 feet deep). If it stays below 20 F during the day, we put in a small deicing “donut” that keeps a patch of water open for gas exchange. We haven’t lost a fish during the winter yet!
